A Terrible PUG Heroic

I did Pa'troll one time. It was barf city, so I never did it again and rep grinded AC solely through ta-BARD rep just like every other faction in WOTLK. Speaking of rep grinding...

So I get home about half an hour early because the project I was working on needs a partner meeting, and he's not willing to do it until this morning. Plus, wife and Paige were off to King's Island for the afternoon. As it turned out, I ended up with like 3+ hours of unexpected playtime. I started with the Tournament dailies and right as I'm picking up the Edge of Winter in HF, a tell goes out in gchat to help heal on a couple bosses in heroic HoS, which is the daily. I haven't instanced much recently, so I jump on it. Well we get in the instance and it's me and Mannodios (80 lock) from the Illuminati and three from , who I've worked with before but is not the best group of players.

As we're standing there waiting for an AFK'er to come back, the mobs at the front of the instance respawn. It is at this point where I realize this is going to be a challenging group. I whisper Mannodios and ask how long they've been in there, and she says "they are nice people just slow." OK, well now you've got a damn good healer so let's get it done. They had finished only Krystallus, and had wiped I guess like 5-6 times on the Maiden of Grief. I didn't even know that was possible. Anyways, as we're reclearing the opening wing one of the AAG guys is moaning about stomach pains on vent. And his guildies, being nice people, start inquiring about his health. Turns out, the guy just had stomach bypass surgery or somesuch and is having strong stomach pains. So we convince him to call his surgeon and sure enough, he's off to the emergency room, but only after we convince him we'll be OK. Seriously dude, real life health bars are more important than anything in game. /facepalm

AAG cannot find a replacement, so I call out in gchat. And immediately pick up Zao, so another 80 lock from our guild. We get her summoned and go up and beat the everloving piss out of Maiden. I immediately get whispers and party chat bombed from the 3 original members of the group for GREAT HEALS OMG! So they must have been running with a complete moron. I know the next two bosses and especially the Brann event are a couple of the harder overall heroic bosses, so I'm barely optimistic. We clear to the Brann event. Wipe. Wipe. Wipe. I tell them this is our last go, and we manage to all die but right as Brann gets his job done and kills all the boss mobs himself. LOL. So we rez run while Brann has his talking fest and get ready for the final boss. At this point Zao is inspecting Manno and asks, what's up with Moonshroud Robe? Why not Ebonweave Robe? Manno says that she couldn't find the Ebonweave Robe on the AH and so settled for the Moonshroud even though its not optimal. /facepalm

So our first try on Sjonnir goes OK, but not quite good enough. Second try, tank D/C's. Third try, Kelley gets home and doesn't leave a hand open to unlock the door so she bangs on the door until I go open it. We'd literally just pulled when she started banging. With a sigh, I put G-Spirit on the tank and run to the door and back. By the time I get back G-Spirit has just been consumed and I'm at 8% health. I couldn't click the Fel Healthstone in time, so I end up refilling the tank, but it's not quite enough. I apologize to the group and tell them we'll buckle down and get him, and of course we do. Daily heroic quest paid for the repair bill, Zao nabbed some serious upgrades, and Zao and I combined to form a new Ebonweave robe with the Frozen Orb for Manno. I got gold for my cooldown cloth and mats to remake them, Zao got a skill point in Tailoring, Manno doesn't look stupid anymore, everyone wins.

Despite the facepalming nature of the HoS run, it was very satisfying to come in and lead a group to a victory I'm fairly certain they don't get unless they have an overgeared healer making up the difference. In any event, I know I made another close guild friend with Manno for sticking it out and making it succeed, and of course Zao is always cool to run with. I capped the night with lots of quest turn ins for the Dalaran and Tournament dailies, netting probably another 100 gold or more.

3.1 Priest Changes and Being All You Can Be

I don't know why people assume the top end of the game should be easy. No game I have ever played and enjoyed was too easy at the end...overcoming the challenge is half the enjoyment! And this must be a recent phenomenon since I hear BC raiding was not easy pre-3.0.2 and everything post-Karazhan is actually pretty tough post-nerf. Did everyone forget in the first 5 months of WOTLK that Naxx was basically a placeholder? I mean not only did everyone know the fight strategies, but it was deliberately made easy.

It's like Jedoga in H-OK. I came to the conclusion that the most important thing was getting the add down before the sacrifice or else I couldn't keep up with healing w/o blowing my only CD. So instead of my normal strategy in such times where I would gain some mana for the duration, I made the decision to offer my weak DPS during that few seconds, which put us over the top. We learned and adapted to beat the boss.

Additional examples: this morning we cleared the first boss event on AN on the fourth try because I died during the third set of mobs, put up some big heals and a couple HoT's on the tank during my spirit phase, then busted my ass back into the instance, where I got there just in time to put Guardian Spirit on the tank and recover to beat the boss. Clapp was whispering me after the fight and was clearly impressed with my "recovery" on that fight. Knowledge from previous encounters with that awful boss event led me to the knowledge I used to be a good player in that situation this morning.

Also in H-OK, I had to make a split decision on whether to use one of my last 2 mana pots on our attempt at Herald Volasj when we lost Caz and the other 2 DPS (one of which was a Shammy) at around 40% and before the second Insanity. I had about 3 minutes left on the CD for Shadowfiend and we were going to wipe without the mana pot as I was OOM. I knew from previous experience that we could elongate the Insanity phase by simply not killing the healer in one of the other person's insanity, and thankfully the tank knew this as well and was just doing enough damage to insane Ekat to break even. So we recovered about half our mana bars and made it within 15 seconds of Shadowfiend coming active again before we finished the insanity phase and proceeded to down the boss easily (I think the Shammy battle rezzed themselves going into the final phase as well, but not 100% sure on that mechanic). We overcame losing all 3 DPS which is amazing, but I had to make a split decision on the mana pot and I made the correct decision that we could recover from that position rather than conceding defeat.

So maybe I'm an above-average player (I don't like to think so), but I learn from my experiences in game and adapt my play to be better off. I make informed rational decisions when I can. Perhaps this is why I'm a Holy Priest healer, because you really have to think about when you will use the tools given to you.

Like the new Holy Hymn which is on a 10 minute CD but gives you 12 medium sized heals on the party over 9 seconds. I still am figuring out when I should use that new ability, and will be better off once I do figure out the best time to use it. Right now, I have no clue.

PUG Naxxramas teaches the virtue of focus

So I'm wrapping up my post-Naxx business last night at around 1:45 AM, when I see...

Triveri has gone offline

Really? A second later Caz comes on, and I realize the most unlikely pairing of two guildies up at 2 AM has occurred. Of course my eyes were probably mighty bloodshot so I just said hello and logged off shortly thereafter. But anyways, another great night of Warcraft if not relatively unexpected. I was in a Naxx or raiding mood all day yesterday for whatever reason, so after getting home and taking car eof the trash and such, I logged on and looked in LFG. Well there happened to be a group of 8 looking for a healer and an offtank. Small guild of about 60 members had about 5 slots and was running it, the rest were puggers. What intrigued me is that the people in the guild were pretty well geared, a little better than myself. They grab me right away without checking armory, which raised a warning flag since I logged out in solo +hit gear, but I hoped for the best. We get people summoned and first pull was around 7:15 PM.

We proceed to annihilate the place for three hours. I got the Arachnophobia achievement (kill all bosses of Arachnid within 20 minutes), we looted emblems and moved on to trash immediately except for the loot master, things were very smooth. We had 6 DPS and 2 Holy Priest healers, so that helped our speed since the healing was more than enough. We killed Arachnid and Plague quarters without losinga single member on any boss fight except Heigan, on which we lost 1 person (sad! another achievement lost). They then go to Construct Quarter, which our guild always saves for last. We got to Gluth and wiped for the first time all night because the kiter did not do a good enough job keeping zombie chows in the back and the kiter healer (not me) ran OOM too fast. We re-grouped and knocked the mangy mutt out on try two, then cleared Thaddius, and the first two bosses in Military with dispatch.

At this point it is literally 10:20. Three hours in the place, and 12 bosses down. In a semi-PUG. Then shit hit the fan. We had a bad pull on the way to Four Horsemen which involved 2-3 sets of death knights and at least one shade. We almost downed them, but it was too much for 2 healers. Then one of our mages D/C's without warning. We proceed to Four Horsemen and try a strategy I'm unfamiliar with since we only have 2 healers, and that is to pull the front horsemen back to the rear and have the tanks tank 2 horsemen at once and everyone switch sides in the back constantly. More efficient, yes. Harder to pull off, yes. We wiped doing that twice, set our 2 druids in the back and tried the normal way twice, all fails. They were about to call it since they had a "hard stop" time of midnight, but right then I finally got a guildie to join us after begging in gchat for an hour off and on. Our remaining mage swapped to his Healadin and we cleared Four Horsemen.

Had 2 wipes on Sapphy, and after the second one our guidlie disappears and D/C's. Devastating, no? Well apparently not as we give it one more go and down Sapphy and Kel'Thuzad easily with 9. We really only needed help surviving Four Horsemen I guess. The only hiccup was losing the kiter tank at about 35% to a frost block, but the main tank just pulled up his britches, taunted the adds, and had 3 healers keeping him up the rest of the way. So while the last 3 bosses took 3 hours or so, I am absolutely confident had it not been for douche bag mage dropping group (Belmardy for your ignore/black lists), we would've been done in under 4 hours. These people were not decked out in Naxx-25 gear either...just Naxx-10 gear for the guildies. We literally sharded 13 epics on the run, and I picked up two epic rings, tier shoulders to give me the 2 piece set I want (the other 3 pieces are slight downgrades for me), and enough emblems to go buy an epic offhand since I'm going with the best mace in the game now. So I'm all epic'd out except for a wand, but I know right where to get once if I can get lucky. I'd literally be rolling offspec stuff now in Naxx, so perfect timing for Ulduar as far as Ekat is concerned.

So that's it. Perhaps my last legitimate Naxx run, and a full clear. It really makes me wonder about the guild we're in though, as a few things stood out. (1) We downed Sapphy and K'T with 9 and not anywhere close to full frost resist gear for most, which means we should be able to do it easily with 10. (2) We ran basically the whole place with 2 healers, which made things quicker...with geared healers such as Ruach, Ronei, Clapp, and myself...we should be able to do this and make more room for DPS. Perhaps quicker runs for the guild. (3) We lost the offtank against K'T early in the kiting phase, a.k.a. the worst thing that can happen, and we still beat K'T with 8 left. (4) Things go infinitely faster with a loot master who stays to conduct rolls, or in our new system bids, while everyone else keeps going. You can take a 5-10 minute break after 2 quarters, but we should be more serious about efficiency. (5) It is obviously possible to get "The Undying" and I had not seen the possibilities until I stepped out from our guild runs.

OK enough of that. But things to think about, and things that make me a little frustrated with our much bigger guild. Yes we are casual because people like me cannot commit to a raid schedule, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be bringing our A-game when we do raid.

A Weekend Recap and a Naxxramas Run

Friday night we went out to Outback Steakhouse because we had a $50 giftcard from Christmas and we needed a break from the routine. Of course being V-Day weekend, we hit a 55 minute wait. Sigh. At least we grabbed seats at the bar and watched some terrible celebrity basketball game at NBA all-star weekend. Service was relatively crappy once we got our table 70 minutes later, but the food was outstanding. Crab legs and steak FTW.

Got home and logged on because baby was not tired enough for bed yet. I decide that it's long overdue for me to kill Sartharion. So I start up a group and grab a couple guildies including Ethecs as well as some PUG's. A couple PUG's that our guild normally runs with joined up based on our reputation, so all of a sudden my first raid lead has responsibilities! Anyways, we down the first drake without much of a strategy, but after that we get the strategy down for the two healers and the two tanks. We get to Sartharion and start the lava dance. Since I couldn't figure out how to make a raid assistant for the tank, I marked myself as "who to follow" in the lava dance. So my healing was probably a little worse than usual, but I had to keep the group alive! After screwing up on the third wave and almost causing a wipe, I led people through the lava competently and we had no trouble finishing off the black dragon. Only thing I rolled on was the Dragon hide Bag, which I won (22-slot). What made the run even more satisfying is we overcame a 12 year old huntard who did not know he could train certain weapon classes and so on. He wiped about 10 seconds into the Sarth fight lol. So we 9-manned the raid basically. Woot!

Saturday morning was slow waiting on wife and baby to get going, so I had time to play around with. I logged on and WG was about 15 minutes away. I ended up grabbing on a heroic VH group who needed a healer, but right as I join they decide to go battle in WG. Sigh. So I go with them and we actually take the castle from the Horde! Woot! I then decide to play double or nothing on my raid leadership and try to put together a 25-man Vault of Archavon (I did 10-man Tuesday). Well I end up with about 10 people from WG battle and slowly fill the rest through guildies and LFG. This included Ethecs, Eitrin, and Cazaldora as I recall. Anyways, that place is such a joke. We cleared it easily, and I really built some repoire or friendship with Ethecs in the two raids. So that's cool, even if he can be a royal d-bag. Our two tanks were the only DK and Warrior in the entire 25 man raid, so of course those pieces dropped for them. How lucky!

Saturday we went around to 15 houses. We found 3 that are possibilities and some real train wrecks. So not a very successful day! Once we got home for a minute I logged on and Vowain was asking if I could heal Naxx day 1. I say I'll be backup for later on, but I've got dinner plans. Turns out Hanity did not heal, so the Illuminati really took their A-team in for Saturday night including Ruach, Ronei, and Clapp on heals. They 1-shotted all 11 bosses I saw last week, so I was excited about Sunday prospects. Did not do much when we got home from dinner at our local Mexican place, had a nice evening.

Sunday we had looked up a few more expensive and promising listings, so we headed out for day 2 of house looking. This was far more fun as we ended up with 4 more possibilities out of 7, including my two front-runners. We also dropped by 4-5 random Open Houses since Sunday afternoon is the day for that. Most were slightly out of our price range, but we met some realtors and had a good time. The last open house we wandered into, we knew it was way out of our price range just driving into the neighborhood. However, we'd had a long day and needed to look at a dream house. The place was $300,000, but it was a steal for the high quality of the house. Tis nice to dream, if only for a few moments.

So on the way home from all this, Kelley calls her parents and asks them when their next couple of days off are to come look inside some houses. We were thinking a week or two from now. Well my mother in law says, why don't we come over tonight. WTF LOL! So while I entered Naxx with the guild, Kelley was in the background trying to set up house viewings and such for the super-short notice. Long story short, she managed to get one of the realtors we met yesterday to agree to take them through some houses today.

Obviously Aurys kind of summed up Naxx pretty well. I cursed at the screen when Aurys rolled under a 9 for the Tier Shoulders, but that's one of the final pieces Ruach needs anyways. We took 3 tries on Gluth the dog mainly because I was having trouble keeping Vowain (our kiter) alive. I got back on top of my game and by then the DPS also had improved their routine, so we got him down. It took us two tries on Thaddius and neither was very pretty due to some people dying to polarity shifts, plus I was on DPS most of the fight which is not efficient. Nevertheless, we got the job done and moved on to Sapphiron. We one-shotted him and it was not even stressful to be honest. Taxing on the healers to an extent, but not stressful. Which led us to Kel'Thuzad with about 1.5 hours left on our 4 hour block. We wiped FIVE times on him. The first attempt was a learning experience, and we lost some people to Shadow Fissures that pop up and Ice blocks that deal 104% damage to a player over 3-4 seconds. Anyways, we only got really close one time, having 8 people alive through Phase 2. Phase 3 starts at 45%, and adds come in that have to be kited for the rest of the fight by an offtank. The worst thing that can possibly happen at this point is the Offtank gets iceblocked. Of course Shishioh gets iceblocked right away. Sigh. Shishioh dies, Ruach dies, we end up wiping at 25%. Although we clearly have the capability to clear him, it will take everyone on top of their game to do it. So we left him for another time.

Here's my take on the Kel'Thuzad fight. As a healer, we basically determine whether the group wipes or wins. This is not like Patchwerk, a DPS race against a timer. First thing, everyone must step out of the bright red swirly shadow fissures when they pop up around you. They one-shot you in about 2 seconds, so that's everyone's own responsibility. The Ice blocks hit one random non-tank person and everyone within 10 yards. So you try to space out the raid accordingly, or else you have 2-4 people getting Iceblocked at once. We healers are lucky if we can shoot off an instant heal to the right ONE person fast enough, let alone worrying about multiples. Clapp, Ruach, and I were doing a pretty solid job, but it's all a matter of being fast with the trigger finger on PWS, Prayer of Mending, and Circle of Healing. Clapp and I were both saving CoH cooldowns for Icebolts, which worked fairly well. Still, you have to heal that person back up to 100% and keep everyone basically topped off the entire fight because of the 104% damage possibility at any point. If you can manage this on 25-man without losing anybody (The Immortal title), wow. Furthermore, we had 5 melee DPS and vowain last night, so we were stuck stacking 2 DPS at a couple locations even with Kel'Thuzad's huge hit box. That made things much harder. Anyways, it is doable and probably easier with more ranged DPS, but this fight is no picnic on healers.

So that's my perspective on the weekend. As I mentioned, the realtor set up a bunch of house viewings today startin at 3:30 PM. My two top prospects are in the bunch, so I am going. I may be sporadic after this on emails for those reasons, but I'm sure you understand. What a crazy weekend!

Ekat discovers Karazhan and TBC Endgame

The eve before Northrend opens, and I log into the game to do enough questing in Nagrand to at least be level 68 and eligible for Northrend this weekend. Although I still have not received my mail and mooncloth, I'm sure Blizzard will work it out before I need it (or at least I hope so). I jump right into the first quest which is Muck-Covered Cores near Halaa. That was not too bad, and I then realized two more quests were right in the same valley, one to kill 50 ogres and another to save Corki again. I figure with about 70k xp left to obtain, that plus the quest turn-ins will ding me. Once I start working on the ogres, people in gchat begin to rumble about a "final" Kara run. It's floundering in getting together, but I keep offering to lay the heals if they will have me, and if they can wait for me. I diligently keep burning ogres down, and thankfully the respawn rate is high. Sure, I died once because of fast respawns, but with 2 other groups hunting ogres in the same cave and valley, it was good to have little wait time between mobs. After burning down enough ogres and releasing Corki, I told Shallimar I could come after turn-ins/repairs/etc, and so I was given a slot. I had just enough time to turn in quests across the zone of Nagrand, port through Shattrath back to Stormwind where I repaired the gear, cleared the bags (including putting a bunch of enchanting and tailoring mats in the bank), and trained at the Cathedral of Light. Right after adding my new spells, including the heal that bounces from raid member to raid member, I received the summon to Deadwind Pass and the Tower of Karazhan. The craziness was about to begin, and a little good, bad, and ugly at the end to summarize is in order.

Three of you know Karazhan very well, but I had no idea what to expect. I knew it had a ton of bosses, but I still underestimated the sheer size of the castle. As it turns out, our group of 10 could only come up with me, a 68 Holy Priest, on main heals and Yannosh (yeah the dry-humper level 69 tankadin) on backup heals. We had 1-2 other non-70's involved throughout the night, but I was the only 68 and our tanks were 70 obviously. We also had 3-4 Paladins throughout the run with no Warriors, which made for a lot of mana bars and not as much pressure on my healing ability to an extent. We enter the front door of Kara, and walk towards the stables. A few trash mobs were here, and we needed those to figure out the team dynamic. Both of our tanks were non-Illuminati, but the run had 6 Illuminati members throughout most of it. The pally tank (Hymn) and the second tank (Tree). It seemed the tanks switched off main tanking each pull to keep things moving initially, and I was able to heal fairly well. We finally approached the first boss, Attumen the Huntsman. He rides on a glorious steed which of course means you get to fight them both. I believe the horse has AOE damage in his front arc, so the tanks tried to herd everybody else to the rear of the horse for whacking on the boss. This boss fight was never in jeopardy, but my mana bar did get low and there were some issues getting the team to work together properly. Better to figure that out early I suppose. With one boss downed, we moved along.

Now you go up the steps at the entrance to the castle and into the Grand Ballrooms. There are plenty of ghostly guests and waiters just lingering around dancing and having a grand old time. We did have a partial wipe at one point when two large groups of party guests were pulled at the same time, I believe by Zaonera (but nobody's pointing fingers until later). Overseeing all the festivities is the second boss Moroes. He is a tall gangly looking fellow who needs to eat some Wheaties, as the nerf came down hard on him. As the battle wore on, we lost a tank Hymn, but Tree stepped in and did a fabulous job. Yannosh was very helpful at backup healing when my mana got low as well. Moroes was not a huge problem, although we did need to rez half the team by the end of the battle with him and his cronies. We cleared out what remaining party guests we needed to, checked to verify that the Guitar (Arcanite Ripper) boss was no longer in the instance, and moved up into some higher hallways. Again, many more trash mobs needed taken down on the road to the next boss. The boss in the Guest Quarters is the Maiden of Virtue. She is a massive chic with anger management issues. With the dps at full range and the tanks in the middle of the room, the Maiden was taken down without much fanfare. Things were going well, and we continued moving through the castle to the famed Opera House.

I did not know until after our first attempt that the Opera House could show you any one of three boss encounters. One is based on the the Big Bad Wolf, one on Wizard of Oz, and one on Romeo and Juliet. That's actually a pretty cool twist to the Opera Event. We were unlucky from what I hear, and we pull the tricky Romeo and Juliet event. The battle has three phases, with Juliet first, then Romeo, then the both of them at the same time. Having flashbacks to the Molten Core Corehounds, these bosses need killed within 10 seconds of each other in Phase III or they regenerate and almost assuredly cause a wipe because the healers and dps'ers will be low on mana by then. With Phase III, you also have the problem of Juliet dropping heals all over the place, so the first attempt was an easy wipe in Phase III as we just were not prepared to take them out. After a rez run highlighted by my accidental stepping into the audience hall of the Opera House (where about 50 level 70 ghosts watch your boss battle and gladly take you out if you step in their area) and another rez run for me, we got the party together with a strategy for doing these bosses. We were putting the rogues on Juliet to interrupt her healing spells and most of the other dps on Romeo, splitting the tanks on opposite sides of the room and leaving Yannosh and myself to overlook the battle. Things did not go well, as the beginning of Phase III was highlighted by me pulling aggro right as Romeo respawned with an ill-timed heal on Hymn. Even with bubble and spam heals, I could not prevent myself from dying. They put up a fight, but the bosses were way too much for the team without the main healer.

At this point we lost one member of the team and had a repair bot made so that we could all recover the damage. I had a bill of almost 10g, ouch by my standards. While we try to fill the spot, Tree starts belittling the Illumnati and saying we'll never make it past Curator let alone the Prince the way we are doing this. At which point some guildies start defending themselves by informing Tree that we have cleared Kara fully numerous times now and we will prevail tonight. He continues bitching about how a main healer with 5000 mana in the bar is worthless and they will not make it. I could not let it pass, so I defended myself in raid chat by letting him know, yeah this is my first kara run and I'm doing the best I can. I got a ton of whispers from guildies at this point encouraging me and saying that I was doing very outstanding considering the circumstances I was thrust into. Of course Tree drops from the group shortly thereafter, and we have to beg for a tank replacement for like 15-20 minutes. Vowain was going to help, but he got caught up in something. Our tank Hymn found a much better geared tank Xero to fill the gap and be the new main tank. With that, it was on to round 3. With the new team members in place and everyone fully repaired, the strategy worked beautifully this time around. Juliet was taken down in Phase III first due to her healing ability, but we downed Romeo in about 6 seconds thereafter and ended the Opera Event.

After a legendary battle, we exited the castle and went around to the back entrance, which saves us some trash pulls I hear. We cleared the Broken Stair of some spirits and made our way to the Menagerie. The Menagerie is the home of The Curator, the next big boss. He has some blue spirits in the area who have addon mobs which focus in on casters. The first three groups of these we pulled led to me dying each and every time as I crit-healed the tank and pulled aggro. The group was definitely giggling about my poor luck, and it was all in good fun as we had 4 paladins there to rez me at will. We go through maybe a half hour of bumps and bruises clearing out these trash mobs and mostly just refilling spots that had opened up in the raid. Again, we kept about 5 Illuminati in at all times and Stonesnake joined us (who I respect because he seems to be quite good). Furthermore, we finally found another healer who was a 70 paladin (Dingchavez) dedicated to healing from the looks of it. After a delay that pushed us past midnight, we finally go in to take out the Curator. This mechanical fiend brings his own additional mobs to the party, but I took most of the fight off learning how to be an off healer in Kara. Dingchavez was way on top of the tank life bars, so outside the HoT's, I really was relatively inactive. I saved a couple of other players as well, and I think we only lost 1 out of 10 in taking down the Curator. Not too shabby at all. Oh and this may make Bruce feel better...so I look at the drops off the Curator and there are these gloves that say Priest/Warrior/Druid. I ask what those are, which leads to a couple rofl and Yannosh yelling at me in whisper to ROLL ON THAT! It turns out with all the pallys that it came down to me and Shishioh, who had just joined us. I win the roll in honor of Dave Bruce, and only then do Stonesnake and Yannosh tell me that those are traded in for Tier 4 gloves. OH MY GOSH! Epic win literally.

At this point it is getting late, but we decide to give it one last push to see how successful we can be. We enter the Guardian's Library and start taking out some nasty mobs that like to explode if the rogues are not interrupting them when they die. We almost wiped once, but we held steady and cleared the way to The Repository downstairs. The boss here is Terestian Illhoof, who has a little demon friend with him who is just as dangerous as he is. At one point in this boss battle, I am informed that one of the party members will be randomly captured in chains at the center of the room, at which point we must focus fire on the chains or else that party member automatically dies. Take a random guess who that would be when it happened...that's right, the main healer Dingchavez. We are not able to save him, so I immediately drop into main healer mode again. It actually goes fairly well from there on out, as I'm not hurting for mana really and we clear the room easily. These boss battles are truly legendary though, compared to the nerfed BC instance content I've experienced, where only the end boss of Underbog is really all that threatening. At one point earlier an epic Mace was given to me by Yannosh even though he won it because it's a bigger upgrade for me (the staff/mace switcheroo continues). At this boss I showed off my ridiculous rolls yet again, accidentally rolling on a tank cloak instead of the cloth item I meant to roll on. I beat Yannosh 96-15 and was able to "return" the favor by letting him have the tank cloak. I did win the cloth belt as well, and we moved on.

At this point it was time for another non-Illuminati to get bitchy I guess, as Dingchavez starts whispering to me "do you even heal?" I ask for his meaning and he says that he never seems to see me drop a heal. I took a little offense but let him know that he should've paid attention to the fact that I've main healed the entire castle except for Curator to this point and we've gotten by, but I was also adjusting to the secondary role in the Curator fight. He does not make any more of an issue of it, but still a jerkwad. We move up to the next boss the Shade of Aran. This is one I heard a lot about because it is incredibly easy to have epic fail on this fight. Basically the boss is in a circular room and has three main abilities, one where you have to run around the middle of the room to avoid ice, one where you have to run to the edges of the room to miss nasty AOE, and flame wreath which kills you if you so much as move a muscle during it. Very much like the hokey-pokey it seems. We make it through the first cycle of three abilities without much fanfare, perhaps losing one person on the AOE. Then it got tricky and I was not as on top of my game, getting caught by the ice which wasn't a huge deal and twitching at the wrong time right at flame wreath went off the second time. Needless to say, that burned me down and I think a couple others had issues around then too as we ended up wiping. At this point the main healer drops from the raid and we're starting to fall apart. The 7 of us left after the carnage are convinced by Xero that we can take the "easy" Chess Event before calling it over.

After a long run through the Library to Gamesman's Hall, we approach the massive chessboard that looks like it dropped straight out of the Harry Potter movie. A cool setup with Alliance and Horde personalities on the two sides. The first run I end up on a healer/bishop and nobody explained to me the point so I'm just dropping heals on random things and getting burned when the boss cheats, etc. We end up losing, but this boss battle just resets quickly without a rez run. We actually fail again with me on foot soldier, but that one I think was because we had a quick lag hiccup and miscommunication. Most of us are ready to quit, but the 5 of us that stay give it one more go. Just like the Opera Event, this one is carefully planned to make the third time a charm. We take the king and lay two healers on him and the other king, making it basically a 3 on 1 event while the other two dealt with the rest of the game. That strategy worked perfectly, and the Chess Event was taken down as easily as advertised once we newer people had the right directions. For the first time all night, no cloth item drops but we pick up more badges and after a ridiculous 5-hour run, call it a night.

Recapping...

THE GOOD
I not only pulled half the epics that dropped last night, I got my first piece of Tier 4 gear! List below for convenience of my Ding 70 gear.
I got to experience endgame before the target moved with WOTLK.
I feel like I've taken my place officially in the guild as a solid healer, as I got tons of compliments from guildies throughout the night.

THE BAD
Main healing most of Kara at 68 = rough times.
The repair bills ended up being about 20 gold, but I'm sure I more than made up for it with epic drops (which was the running joke as the night went along).
A five hour run that did not end up with a full clear, missing out on Shade of Aran, Netherspite, and most importantly, Prince Malchezaar.

THE UGLY
Getting bashed in raid chat by Tree the tank and in whispers by our temproary main healer Dingchavez.
Probably being a primary cause of the second Opera Event wipe and a big part of the Aran wipe.

So while I will love to run Kara again sometime, hopefully the next time it will not be as legit of a run and we'll all be a little higher level. I want to experience it fully like Molten Core, but this run will always hold a dear place in my heart as an accomplishment. I main healed Kara at 68! Now, to Northrend with haste!
